| RURAL
DEVELOPMENT |
|
“India lives in her village”, is true even to
this day. Nearly 60 percent of the population
depending on agricultural sector for their
livelihood and is contributing nearly 40 percent
of the national income. Agricultural sector has
its influence on industrial development, which
not only helps in the earning of foreign
exchange but also in satisfying the basic needs
of the population. As the population in the
country is increasing enormously in spite of
various measures to curb it, the demand for food
and other consumer goods is increasing rapidly;
to meet this demand we have to depend mostly on
agriculture. |
|
BORE WELL IRRIGATION: |
| Without having a substantial increase in
the agricultural production, the economy
is not in a position to achieve the plan
objectives. CAPART under Ministry of
Rural Development, Govt. of India
provided fund to ICDA to carry out such
programs as Bore Well Irrigation, Inter
Cropping & crop Diversifications, Tube
Well for Drinking Water. |
 |
| Orissa’s
agriculture has suffered much due to its
dependence on the vagaries of the
monsoon and extensive damage caused by
floods and droughts. There are little
stress on minor irrigation schemes,
which required less investment and
shorter time of completion. The
underground water potential in the
coastal district of Orissa is enormous.
Therefore attempt has been made to
provide bore well irrigation by ICDA in
Padhani Gram Panchayat of its
operational area under Bhadrak Dist. The
entire program is participatory in
nature. The stakeholders were motivated
to carry out the entire activities of
installation of bore well and its
maintenance. There are 6 groups of such
stakeholders and each group consists of
10 no. of marginal farmers. The project
has been conceived to provide irrigation
to minimum 60 hact. of land. As regards
the functioning of the groups; they are
transferred with the rights to manage
the irrigation system. Every group is
functioning in a democratic and
economically efficient manner. The need
of each and every member has been taken
care of. A sense of the ownership of the
system and its management has been
instilled into them for optimum
management of water. |

INTER CROPPING & CROP DIVERSIFICATION |
|
Another major activity of ICDA in rural
development is to increase production by
crop diversification and inter cropping
system. We had put strenuous and
continual effort to develop our farmers’
aptitude towards crop diversification
and inter cropping system. Human
activity is not only determined by
capability but it is also subject to
external influences such as social and
moral values and an economic incentive
which determines the attitude and
motivation to adopt new
methodologies/technologies. We are
content to place here that 280 no. of
house holders of marginal farmers were
covered under the present program, whose
attitude to agriculture underwent a
dramatic change. |
|
DRINKING WATER |
|
Consumption of contaminated drinking water was
another area, which drew attention of ICDA on an
urgent basis. Six no. of hand pumps were
installed in Padhani Gram Panchyat for safe
drinking water. These measures would not have
been effective if the community was not
involved. The community was involved in the
implementation, acceptance and maintenance of
hand pumps. The villagers were also consulted
with regard to the location of the hand pumps.
Special drives were organized using members to
contact groups from each village and trained
over five days on the linkages between water and
disease and the importance of hygiene. Another
area of concern here was in the disposal of
wastewater. This problem was solved by the
community who undertake the responsibility of
diverting the stagnant water around the hand
pumps for productive purpose, as for instance,
for growing plants etc. |

RURAL SANITATION |
|
Rural Sanitation was another component of ICDA under
Rural Development programme. It is believed that a
well-designed project combined with water supply,
excreta disposal and hygiene education can reduce
diarrhea morbidity by 30 to 50 percent, reduce mortality
by an even grater extent and can significantly reduce
other communicable infections and parasitic
infestations. They also help to improve the nutritional
status of infants and children. It is because of
above-mentioned facts ICDA has been providing simple
latrines to the rural households of below poverty line
groups. These latrines do not require any special
servicing and are user friendly. As of now, 600 no. Of
such families are covered under the programme. Dist.
Water & Sanitation Society under Ministry of Rural
Development, Govt. of India had provided fund to ICDA
for Integrated Household Latrine Prog. |
|
INTEGRATED HANDLOOM TRAINING |
|
One of the priority areas of ICDA is to generate
employment for the craftsmen, who have lost their income
due to their failure to meet the changing demand of the
customers. This is a natural phenomenon. Every
generation has its own test towards their live.
Therefore it is incumbent upon the craftsman to produce
things that has demand in the market. Understanding this
ICDA has been implementing Integrated Handloom Training
Program of Ministry of Textile, Govt. of India at Sabira
under Soro Block of Balasore Dist. There are 20 no. of
trainees and they are being trained by Master Craftsman
appointed by Weavers Service Center, Bhubaneswar under
Ministry of Textile. Training is specially meant for
value addition so that the craftsman gets maximum
benefit out of their labour. The quality of the product
should rise to a level where this will be a demand
driven and not supply driven. The entire programme is
stipendiary |
| developed by: gnom TECHNOLOGY Bhadrak. |

|
| MISSION |
| ICDA as a secular socio-economic Organization
has undertaken to itself the task of enabling the rural & urban poor constituting small and marginal farmers, the
land less, Dalits, Tribe, fisher folk, unemployed women, men,
youth
and minorities to move towards sustainable development by
